Markham is a professional killer who has a near death experience during a botched mission. Determined to avoid ever returning to the Hell he glimpsed, Markham dedicates himself to balancing the scales. He's going to save a life for every life he's taken. And he's taken a lot of lives... A new ongoing crime series for fans of Criminal and the novels of Lee Child and Robert Crais.
Near Death #1 eBook Jay Faerber Tomm Coker Simone Guglielmini
Near Death is a great read. It's a comic or graphic novel, whichever you prefer, and I've followed it up through issue 5 and I'm definitely going to continue. There's a trade paperback which will soon be available on Amazon but if you are a collector, and I am, you'll want to get the individual issues too. This story is done as intricately as Criminal by Ed Brubaker; if you collect I hope you've seen that one. The art is dark, just like the story, but it works perfectly. It is true Noir. The story is placed in Seattle and a life-changing event literally affects the way Markham, a contract killer, looks at life. The writer is Jay Faerber and the artist is Guglielmini and they make quite a team.
Pick up this series or the trade or both; it is literally a killer. Markham is changed but he's still in the game. Issue two has him hired to protect a pedophile, or a "skinner" in jail terminology, and it twists and turns in a way that would make Andrew Vachss, the creator of P.I. Burke, proud. I don't want any spoilers here so I won't say too much. Markham is still a killer but he only feels right about killing those who deserve it. But how does he make that decision?
The story Near Death is powerful, and in between the deadly action, it asks philosophical questions. Which side are you on? All these issues are currently available on Amazon and the trade can be pre-ordered.
If you like challenging graphic novels, you'll enjoy this. Well done, Jay Faerber and team, well done.
